Firstly we must welcome Mark back to the club. He has been absent for a while with some ‘dodgy mechanics!’ but fortunately all seems to be well now. You will have to go steady for a while to make sure everything works as it should!!
After their warmup, exercises, stretches, breakfalls and cartwheels the juniors were split into two groups, the older players went off to practice Uchi mata whilst the younger ones went back to the beginning with Osoto Otoshi. Both groups came back together with a round robin of randori and Newaza before the the session with a game of dodgeball.

Warmups, exercises, stretches, breakfalls and cartwheels formed the basis of the start of the junior session. As they were going to begin learning Harai goshi balance exercises were also used, balancing on the left leg then raising the right leg to the rear trying to keep it straight. They began their technique with the arm around their partners waist and continued this in Uchi Komi initially without throwing, so good technique was essential. They then progressed to using the safety mats completing the whole technique. As they progressed some good results were becoming evident. They also tried

The juniors started back after the Easter break with warmups, exercises, stretches, breakfalls and cartwheels. Despite the break the juniors are still improving well. The evening session centred on Tomoenage and the fancy cartwheel escape, not really a juniors throw but a bit of fun and hopefully getting them to think of other types of escape. Working in pairs initially one player laid down and the other attempted a cartwheel over their partner. This was then progressed to the player on the mat sitting up and taking a grip and then laying down and the other player then attempting the cartwhee

After shutting last week because of covid we are open again and the juniors were straight back into training as if nothing had happened. After their warmup some stretching and breakfalls they were split into three groups where they practiced the basic turnover with Uke in an ‘all fours’ position. There was some finer instruction of where to place the arms as some of the players were having trouble trying to put an arm through the gap between arms and legs. Once that was cleared up things progressed well and by the end of the session they were much better than when they started. The junior sess

This weeks junior session started with warmup exercises followed by breakfalls then cartwheels. We had a couple of new starters who were then taken to one side and taught their breakfalls. For the remainder Osoto otoshi was demonstrated and they were then split into groups and proceeded to practice using the safety mats to help cushion their fall. After this they demonstrated their techniques to the whole group. De ashi Bari on the move was then demonstrated next then and again they moved away into space to practice this. They finished their session with a couple of games dodgeball.

This weeks started with the juniors completing their warmup, stretches and breakfalls before moving onto the first part of their session. This took the form of a demonstration of how and where to place the feet for Tai otoshi. The juniors practiced this firstly individually then with a partner and finally as a complete throw. The safety mats were used to help cushion the repeated landings. Then they moved onto Kesa gatame and then combined this with the throw before demonstrating their efforts in front of everyone. We can report that there were some good examples shown indicating good progre

After their warmup, stretches and breakfalls the juniors watched a demonstration of a simple turnover into Kesa gatame before moving off with a partner to practice. There were a number of partner changes so everyone got the chance to try the technique on different sizes of opponent. They also used this time to ensure they were able to get into Kesa gatame quickly without losing control of their partner. Then they moved onto some Newaza randori before finishing their session with a couple of games of dodgeball.
The senior session started with warmups, some stretching and their breakfalls. They

This week the juniors session was missing a numbers of players due to school holidays however our diehards started their session with a warmup followed by stretching and breakfalls (Ukemi). Then they had a go at cartwheels, some good some needing a bit more practice. The technical part of the training focused on Osoto othoshi paying attention to hand placement on the jacket and also to foot placement. After this the juniors moved on to Newaza work concentrating on Osaekomi waza (hold downs or pinning) before finishing with a game of cat and mouse then dodgeball as a form of warming down.

This weeks junior session started with a warmup followed by some stretching and their breakfalls. They then had a go at some cartwheels again!, let’s call this a work in progress. The main body of training took the form of randori, firstly with Tachiwaza where one players did all the throwing and the other offering some light resistance. Then they swapped over roles and then changed partners which gave them the chance to try their techniques on different sizes of opponents. Their last part of training was in Newaza, changing partners every few minutes. They finished their session with a couple

The junior session, as always, started with a warmup followed some stretching and their breakfalls before having another go at cartwheels. Still needs work!! The technical section of the evening took the form of grading preparation for 1st, 2nd and 3 Sho also for 1st Mon. This covered Osoto otoshi into Kesa gatame and the escape. These techniques were demonstrated by each pair at the end of their session. It was noted though that more practice is required on tying belts (Obi) and the Japanese/English terminology. Finally they finished off with some Newaza changes and a game of dodgeball.

The juniors started their evening with a warmup followed by some stretching and then breakfalls. They finished off with further attempts of cartwheels. All the players then took part in the 1st Mon syllabus, Osoto Otoshi, Kesa gatame and the escape also the relevant terminology. After some hard work and tough testing our successful players were: Tumas and Matis promoted to 1st Mon, Jessica promoted to 3rd Sho, Darcy and Margaret promoted to 2nd Sho and Ellie to 1st Sho. Many congratulations and well done on your hard work and efforts. Other players were not quite ready yet but after some mo

With colder nights drawing in a good warmup with some stretching and breakfalls was essential for the junior session. This was followed again by some cartwheels which are slowly improving. The first part of the session saw the juniors working on gripping techniques (Kumi kata), how to move their hands around an opponent’s jacket whilst maintaining some control and not just letting go. They started out in a static position which, after a few minutes, was progressed to changing grips during movement. Then they moved on to Randori and Newaza changes and it was really good the see the older junior

This week saw the club’s annual presentation evening but before that there was some judo to be done. The session was slightly shorter than usual but followed the same format, a warmup followed by some stretching and then breakfalls and also the popular and improving cartwheels. Tai otoshi was demonstrated with emphasis on foot placement by Tori and the need for a good breakfall by Uke. The juniors then went on to practice this in a round robin and using the safety mats to lessen the impact of all the landings.
They then moved on to the presentation of trophies and the well earned accolades we

A few absent players this week mainly due to colds but the remainder carried on regardless. Warmup followed by breakfalls got the juniors ready for their session. The players paired up and started with De ashi Bari with the older players executing the throw on the move and the younger ones starting with toe tapping before moving onto the throw. Mune gatame was then demonstrated to them then everyone practiced De ashi Bari transitioning into Mune gatame. Finally the escape technique was demonstrated and then all three elements were put together and there was some excellent results from all play

Wednesday was the last judo session of the year. Unfortunately there were fewer numbers in the junior session than expected and sadly they missed their Christmas gifts. However those who were there warmed up with some exercises and their breakfalls. They followed this with some cartwheels which are improving so keep up the hard work, then we’ll progress to one handed cartwheels!! They then split into pairs to practice some turnovers before ending the year with some games, cat and mouse, crab football and a final game of sumo. They all worked really hard particularly with the games which they

Welcome to 2024 and we hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year. We had a good turnout of juniors and after a steady warmup, some stretching and breakfalls they got into their session. This took the form of a round robin of Tachiwaza, different ages and sizes all working together which took up most of the session. They also worked on mat etiquette particularly for competitions, bowing on/off the mat, referee’s terminology and importantly when to and not to release your opponent!!

After the senior warmup and to get back into the swing of things they practiced moving around the mat area

Great turnout on a cold evening so a really good warmup, stretching and breakfalls was the first order of the juniors session. This was followed by cartwheels which are definitely improving. The main aspect of the junior session was randori with plenty of changes so everyone got to fight with each other. Emphasis was made ensuring that the bigger players looked after the smaller ones thus making sure that everyone got something positive out of the session. Again towards the end of the session mat etiquette was practiced simulating the procedures required at competition contests (entering the m

After their warmup , stretching and breakfalls the junior session started with a demonstration of Tai Otoshi. The juniors were then paired off and went to practice. After a few changes they then went into some randori using competition rules and referee terminology to practice the throw in a competition environment. After a water break they began practicing transition into hold downs using Ogoshi into Kesa Gatame or Kuzushi Kesa Gatame then another round of randori as previously. The session finished with a game of crab football. A great effort from all the juniors and improvement was noticed

The juniors had a different warmup at the start of their session, turtles, then exercises, stretches and cartwheels which are still improving. For the main part of their session they worked on Ouchi Gari. It was broken down into parts, firstly the circular motion of the attacking leg which was practised using a cone and moving the leg around the cone to create the circular motion. This action was then used against a partner and was progressed to the full throw. Finally a round robin of randori and Newaza before finishing with a game of dodgeball.

A good warmup including stretching and the ever improving cartwheels! for the juniors. The main session was a continuation from last week, working on Ouchi Gari again with emphasis on foot action and making a good circular motion. They practiced individually and then with partners with some very good results showing through. Then they moved on to a combination of Ouchi Gari and Kouchi Gari again with some good results. There was then a round robin of Newaza and a final game of dodgeball before being tested on the names of the techniques they had been practicing.

Junior session warmup consisted of stretching, breakfalls and the still improving cartwheels. A continuation from last week working on Ouchi Gari and Kouchi Gari using cones again to get the attack leg motion right before moving on to working with a partner. One problem keeps cropping up, which leg to attack, but things are improving. They finished their technical session with a round robin of Tachi waza using the two throws before finally finishing with a game of turtles then dodgeball.
Congratulations to Sasha on his successful completion of his grading to 1st Mon. Keep working hard.

As part of their warmup the junior session started with some relay races including exercises then their breakfalls before finishing with cartwheels. For their technical element Ippon seoi Nage was demonstrated, initially from a kneeling position with emphasis on where the arm is placed and on the pulling and rotation forces. After some practice this was then progressed a standing position using safety mats for the landings. Further progression was made making a combination with Seoi toshi. The junior session started with some relay races followed by stretching, breakfalls and cartwheels, it’s good to see their confidence in this activity improving. This evening was a continuation from last week, working on Ippon Seoi Nage and Seoi toshi. After some time working with these two throws individually and then as a combination the juniors were then introduced to Kami shiho gatame. This was then used in conjunction with the two throws as transition into Osaekomi waza (ground work). The junior session welcomed back Tumas back onto the mat after breaking a toe at a recent competition which has kept him out of action. They started their session by warming up, stretching and completing their breakfalls before finishing with more cartwheels. All slowly improving. The session worked on Uke goshi with emphasis on the body’s position and not confusing this throw with Ogoshi. Whilst the younger players worked on these elements and using the safety mats for landing the older players were encouraged to work left and right handed. They moved on to the hold down Kuzure kesa gatame a

The junior session started with their warmup followed by some stretching, breakfalls and finally cartwheels all of which keep improving. Improving balance came next and this saw the juniors hopping on one leg then the other. Then came a speed exercise, in pairs they faced each other in the press up position then using their hands tried to pull their opponents hand away in an effort t make them lose their balance. This also helps to strengthen the arms. Then using uchikomi they moved up and down the length of the mat turning in for Ogoshi. A round robin of tachi waza and Newaza before a final

The juniors started their session with warmup exercises, stretches and balance exercises. This was followed with their breakfalls and finally some cartwheels which they are getting more confident at.
