Warmup exercises, breakfalls and cartwheels got the juniors ready for their session which took the form of Newaza. With Uke on all fours a basic turnover was demonstrated before the players paired off and went off to practice. They changed partners frequently which enabled them to experience the differences and difficulties between different partners/opponents. The second turnover demonstration saw Uke starting in the prone (lying face down) position before Tori executed the turnover. Once again they paired off and went away to practice changing partners regularly. They finished their session

The evening was warm and humid which saw plenty of water breaks for the juniors during their session which started with warmup exercises, stretches, breakfalls and cartwheels all of which continue to improve. The session followed on from last week so after a demonstration of a turnover into Yoko shiho gatame the juniors paired up to practice. The second turnover saw a transition into Kesa gatame. Both were initiated from the prone position and also saw numerous changes so everyone got to experience working with players of different experience and size. 🔻I was a great junior session on Sunday further working on Ippon Seionage 🦶🏻🖐🏻 position & hip drive. We introduced SeioToshi for the young ones & gripping change setup for older players. We worked on the 🐓 wing turnover & catch in Newaza. Lots of fun & 👾finished what a fun and enjoyable session.

We continued training the whizzer turnover and juji jime shime waza (choke) technique yesterday. We then added a nice armlock if the choke doesn’t work. The class finished with newaza randori in guard with the guard player working to get the techniques off against an uke giving around 60% resistance. Alfie nailed both techniques beautifully as demonstrated in this video.

Wednesday evening junior session started with warmup exercises, stretching, breakfalls and some cartwheels. A simple turnover into Kesa gatame was demonstrated by the coach and after everyone was sure they knew what they were doing they moved off in pairs to practice. Every couple on minutes they changed partners so they got to try with different weight and size to see the difference/difficulty in turning opponents over. Junior focused judo every Tuesday 6.30 till 8pm. Went through a couple of useful turnovers and did some groundwork fighting this evening before throw training on crash mats. Fun, useful training.

Vic Scott provided us with the ground basics, turnovers and guard sweeps with an incredibly powerful choke. The night ended in half an hour of newaza randori!

We introduced the Craig Fallon newaza roll yesterday at training. It’s a bit tricky but once you’ve got the basics right it’s a high percentage turnover technique. Here’s a demo from the master himself.

A great training session last night featuring kata eri seoinage and osoto guruma throws and this little gem of a turnover. It’s oh so simple but deceptively strong and effective. Fabian Canu of France became world champion using the technique at the highest level.

A lively session last night at Bushi JC. We trained kouchi gari foot sweep and then linked it to morote seoinage shoulder throw when uke reacts with a block. Classic judo applying the action/ reaction principle. In newaza we applied the double lapel turnover into tate shiho gatame. Good work lads!

A great day for Henry Spooner at the British Schools Individual Championship Finals, picking up a well deserved Silver medal.

Representing Tendring Technology College and Walton On the Naze Judo Club, Henry put on a talented display of Judo, winning his pool which included a win over a member of the Scottish National Squad with a strangle to ensure the best route to the final. More solid groundwork saw Henry use a well drilled turnover and hold down for a great win in the semi finals and on to the final. On this occasion he was beaten by a better player, so having to settle for the Silver.
