Sad news. Barry Carey who was our club president has passed away after a long period of illness. He can be seen here wearing a red and white belt (6th Dan) after attending one of our comps to present medals. I think this was around 8 years ago. A young Alex S, William, Alex M, TJ and Louis can be seen. Barry was an inspiration to many of us in judo and will be dearly missed.

Bushi JC have been drilling juji gatame armlock consistently over the last few weeks. We have been using a figure four grip with the aim of progressing to the classic Neil Adams turn. In this vid, judo and BJJ competitor Craig Ewers shows how Neil used his armlock.

We continued training the whizzer turnover and juji jime shime waza (choke) technique yesterday. We then added a nice armlock if the choke doesn’t work. The class finished with newaza randori in guard with the guard player working to get the techniques off against an uke giving around 60% resistance. Alfie nailed both techniques beautifully as demonstrated in this video.

There was lots of juji gatame drilling yesterday evening. We made sure that uke was controlled in the position with good body position and leg control. We then trained how to finish the armlock using this neat trick. It works a treat! It really unlocks a strong grip. If you like the video and share I’ll post the Koji Komoro (Komlock) armlock that we practiced too!

For two weeks we have added tai otoshi to our throwing drills and combined it with kesa gatame and juji gatame. Adam and Connor then produced some great tai otoshi in randori. I was all 😊! Here’s Adam demonstrating how to link a throw into an armlock. Nice hikite/ sleeve pull Adam.

Our training phase of exploring tai otoshi, kesa gatame and juji gatame came to an end yesterday. We trainined how to turn uke from a strong turtle position using a figure four arm control and a neat little flick of the foot against the knee. Class ended with newaza randori aiming to get an armlock and then plenty of standing randori. Some great tai otoshis on show!!

A good session yesterday evening led by Tony which focused on the leg throw ouchi gari and using it to ‘open up’ uke’s defence to allow tai otoshi to sneak in. Here’s a nice demo by Alfie. Note the excellent use of the right hand in planting uke on the mat.

Bushi JC is back from a week’s break tomorrow evening. Two of our lads Henry and Flynn competed at the University Championships last weekend. Both fought well in a tough competition. Henry picked up 2 wins and Flynn picked up a silver medal. Good work gentlemen. Here’s one of Flynn’s wins with a nice seoi.

Last night’s session trained morote seoinage and linking it with kouchi gari and osoto gari. No videos of this training but here’s a clip of our lad Alfie throwing with a nice kouchi at the weekend’s NHC comp.

We are lucky to have a really special group of young judokas at Bushi JC. Tony coached them in uke goshi and de-ashi barai yesterday evening and then encouraged them to use these techniques in randori. We saw some fantastic Ippon throws! Tony and Kev were happy coaches. The team also drilled their figure four juji gatame armlocks in their quest to be Neil Armlock-esque arm hunters! Good work team.

We introduced the Craig Fallon newaza roll yesterday at training. It’s a bit tricky but once you’ve got the basics right it’s a high percentage turnover technique. Here’s a demo from the master himself.

Five judokas from Bushi Judo Club, Chelmsford will be travelling north to Hull JC to celebrate their 40th birthday this weekend with a training session with newaza legend Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki. If you are not booked on you are missing out on a great opportunity to train with one of the greats. I’ll be meeting a personal hero!

When this happens, it's usually because the owner only shared it with a small group of people, changed who can see it or it's been deleted.

There’s no training at Bushi JC on Monday 23 October. To keep your judo appetite satiated here’s the juji gatame from guard that we trained on Monday. It was popularised by Neil Adams who could get this armlock off in so many different positions. Matt D’Aquino from Beyond Grappling does the technique credit with this demo.
When I was a kid I learnt this setup as the 'Neil Adams setup' to get the armbar from guard. So for me I have always called it the Neil Adams setup. If you wa...

This is the armlock that we practiced on Monday evening. We trained it a little differently from the video with the armlock being applied once we had back control from a kesa gatame escape. Komlock is a great resource for newaza techniques.

A good training session at Bushi JC yesterday evening. We were down a few judokas but we were lucky to have two visitors who had travelled all the way from Barking to train with us. Thanks Danny and Ricky, your demo of BJJ juji gatame from mount was well received by our young judokas. We look forward to hosting you again.

Our last session of 2023 was completed yesterday evening. We drilled the ogoshi throw and then used ogoshi to set set up ouchi gari using classic judo action/ reaction principles. In newaza we drilled okuri eri jime and then reintroduced old our friend the juji gatame armlock when uke defends the strangle. Once the mats were away there was a sip of sake rice wine preceded by a shout of ‘banzai!!’. Good work guys.

A nice busy mat at Bushi JC this evening! Photo shows some spirited randori after technique work. 2024 is going to be a big year for our club as September will mark 20 years since our founding. We will hold some celebratory events to commemorate being Chelmsford’s longest continuously running judo club. Feel free to come and train with us and experience our fun and rewarding coaching programme.🥋

Good work from all the lads at Bushi yesterday evening. Dave coached the uki goshi hip throw and linked it to kesa gatame hold down. The deashi barai foot sweep from last week’s session was also drilled to keep it in the judokas arsenal. Some great throws in randori.
