The junior session was taken by Liam and during the warmup he learned a valuable lesson in instructions and interpretation when dealing with young judoka. The first part of the session was centered around Osoto Otoshi. After a full demonstration the juniors paired up and went off to practice in the form of Uchi Komi but without the throw completion. Eventually the safety mats were introduced and then they practiced the whole technique to completion with players changing partners regularly. I am deeply humbled to have coached three amazing people at my first ever and theirs, European Judo Union Tournament, held in Swansea.

For each of them it meant overcoming certain challenges as they have mixed needs, such as Down syndrome, visual impairments, Autism, and ADHD.

Beanie and Isaac, are our seasoned competitors, travelled along with Georgina, who likes to compete but not as often. Each of them demonstrated extraordinary resilience and dedication.

At just 12 years old, Isaac is a classic example of how incredible achievements are possible

Warmup exercises, breakfalls and cartwheels got the juniors ready for their session which took the form of Newaza. With Uke on all fours a basic turnover was demonstrated before the players paired off and went off to practice. They changed partners frequently which enabled them to experience the differences and difficulties between different partners/opponents. The second turnover demonstration saw Uke starting in the prone (lying face down) position before Tori executed the turnover. Once again they paired off and went away to practice changing partners regularly. They finished their session

The evening was warm and humid which saw plenty of water breaks for the juniors during their session which started with warmup exercises, stretches, breakfalls and cartwheels all of which continue to improve. The session followed on from last week so after a demonstration of a turnover into Yoko shiho gatame the juniors paired up to practice. The second turnover saw a transition into Kesa gatame. Both were initiated from the prone position and also saw numerous changes so everyone got to experience working with players of different experience and size. After this the session started with a demonstration of Ogoshi but initially not completing the throw. This was about ensuring that the juniors were able to correctly turn in and position themselves to execute a good technique. After some time practicing this they then moved on to completing the throw using the safety mats and also changing partners regularly. The juniors followed their usual warmup of exercises, stretching, breakfalls and cartwheels before starting their technical drills. This centred around Mune gatame and the escape. A demonstration was completed and they then partnered up to practice. All the players worked really hard producing some good identifiable techniques.
