Shime waza (strangles) are a staple of new waza (groundwork) for seniors, failing to score ippon may open chances to submit your opponent. Today's is a simple strangle which is in the Brown belt syllabus for British Judo Association

Kataha-jime (single-wing strangle)

1, From behind your opponent, reach your right arm around uke's neck to grip their left lapel
2, Slip your left hand under their left armpit and around the back of their neck, so that the back of your left hand is against the back of their neck.
3, Strangle uke by pulling with your right hand and pushi

A great day yesterday for the club at the first Grand Prix event of the year in Clyde. We had Liam, Filip and Alessandro competing and I am extremely proud of all their attitudes, attacking judo and fighting spirit.
Liam came a hard-fought 5th place with 2 ippon wins (one in 6 seconds) and Alessandro left with more valuable points towards his 1st dan, experience and further proof that his journey towards 1st dan is gathering steam. They both showed maturity in their Judo and huge technical progression.

A good day at the Clyde Grand Prix for our team. Started off with Rumi in his first Grand Prix winning gold, winning all his matches by Ippon. Robbie, another first timer put in a great effort, winning one of his three matches. Tough start for Nathan but still put it in line mixing it in the -42kg. After losing his opening bout, Louis came back to win the rest of his matches to win bronze. Jack moved up to B band and had a couple of tough matches and wasn’t able to show the improvements he has made in the club. Abigail & Max got to experience contests against brown belts. Alex met blues & greens.
Max also fought a couple of 15 year olds (he is only 11!). Cam was surrounded by green belts & Ian met a 4th Dan.
Eddy, well he was in a league of his own. Three big ippon wins in less than a minute total for the three fights.
A shout out also to Jeff who spent the day officiating.

James won his first and lost his second by Ippon. He then waited to see if he was pulled back in . Which he was he then won his next with a Armbar then his next by a Waza-ari but it was a scrappy battle to the end James loses the next fight to a French precadets squad member . Fight up a age group and a weight. Well done James.

It was great to welcome the 1st Knaphill Beaver Scouts to our Woking Dojo!

The children had great energy and listening skills! The team did so well that we covered much more than usual in a taster class!

They nailed the Japanese words:

Hajime (Go/Start), Mate (Stop) and Rei (Bow)

Learned the aim of judo = to score an ippon.

They had a chance to wrestle their partners on the ground and learned a hold-down (pin) called mune-gatame!

Finishing with break falls on the crash mat and a game of land and sea!

All of that in just 50 minutes!

Congratulations to Sienna, Leighton, Freya and Isabella who fought at the Bonsai Kyoso yesterday. Sienna started the day with a gold in her pool and Leighton followed her with another gold to add to his collection. A great day for the Lynas family watched by proud grandfather and HJC stalwart Joe Lynas. The 100% record couldn't continue as Freya and Isabella were drawn in the same pool, Isabella taking the gold with three quick ippons. Freya was unlucky to finish with a bronze after she and the other two girls in the pool finished with identical records and had to split by who scored the faste

Well done to all of the players who fought at the Bonsai Kyoso today in Livingston. A great development event aimed at getting as much mat time and experience in a competitive environment, we had some players fighting their first competition. The coaches were very pleased with everyone's effort today, lots of good judo on display and some big ippon wins!

Thank you to @osterley_judo_club kinryujc and ipponjudolondon for coming together with us to create a great development event for some of our youngest judoka. 40 children took part assisted by 6 coaches and 6 volunteers and it was a whole lot of fun. The judoka gave of their best and showed great skill. Positive attitudes, friendship and respect were the real names of the game and we just loved it!
