She investigated the population status and threats to the endangered marine dugong (sea cow) by interviewing local fishermen. Yesterday evening, the final night of boarding took place for the 2023/24 academic year.

With water-pistols and balloons at the ready, 80 of our children came together on the Front Lawn for the annual Beachborough water fight! Mr Blithe and Mr Gross took charge of the BBQ, and cooked some delicious food for the children to enjoy before the fun commenced.

It was also a special evening to celebrate our beloved Matron, who after 37 years, is retiring and starting a new adventure. Our Senior Boarders presented a gift to her, and the children thanked her for all that she has done for them. The

Congratulations to Christina Karas for being awarded the Judo Alberta Comeback Athlete of the Year. At the 2023 Quebec Open Christina suffered a broken collar bone; this was a special injury in which the ER doctor said that “we only normally see this type of injury when a person has been in a car accident”. Throughout that time in the hospital and during her long recovery Christina showed determination, strength and displayed a positive attitude. Massive congratulations to newest judoka of the month.
Sonny joined the club near end of 2023.
He has worked hard at judo gaining his 5th kyu this this past week and Bronze medal in his first competition at the recent Granite city gran prix. Some excellently fought contests.
This was a very easy decision by coaches Audery and Keith as to who this award should go to this month.

The HEIST Awards celebrate excellence in Education Marketing and, since their inception over 30 years ago, they have given institutions across the education sector the chance to celebrate their work. As we near the end of the 2023-24 school year, the Carnegie Judo Club, in partnership with The Fighting Chance Project (Scotland) charity and Fu Dog Martial Arts, have been working with Woodmill HS and cluster Primary Schools to deliver our Judo intervention programmes. Rooted in the Judo Values and as an Education System, the intervention is aimed at helping pupils who have some form of additional support needs (ASN) or others with social, emotional or behavioural (SEB) issues.

Next up of our seniors…. Monty!

Monty joined us at the end of 2023 (literally the last session of the year!) but has quickly become a regular member of the club joining extra sessions, circuits alongside our regular training times.

Monty is keen to learn and has an interest in judo and its background as well as studying the techniques he’s learning. We took Monty up to Glasgow to enter his first competition (a 5 mat area event with players from across Scotland and England) where he smashed it, winning a bronze medal and experiencing a re-fight after three players in his group ended on the

4 years ago this weekend, I was introduced to Michihiro Omigawa online as we were both trying our hardest to keep judo alive throughout covid. We had our first zoom session from his dojo in japan. In the past 4 years, our club have trained at Neo dojo on our last tour in 2023 , my family have spent time with him in April of this year in Yokohama and he is now in Scotland at our dojo, sharing the same passion for judo. Some good things have come out of the covid years, namely friendships.
