Judo medal competitions have been taking place at the Olympics today.🥋 This traditional Japanese martial art originally derived from jiu-jitsu, the hand-to-hand combat technique of ancient samurai warriors. The sport teaches you to use technique, timing and skill rather than just brute strength to defeat your opponent.

The sun was shining with a gentle breeze.

Hundreds of students gathered at the East Sands at dawn today to take part in the traditional May Dip which is said to bring good luck in exams 🌊📚🌊

At sunrise on May Day students make their way down to East Sands and collectively run into the North Sea. As fog descended over St Andrews, students braved the chilly waters to take part in the annual tradition.

A Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers; flowers (花, hana) in this case almost always refer to those of the cherry (桜, sakura).

From the end of March to early May, cherry trees bloom all over Japan as the blossoms only last a week or two.

In 2013 we were fortunate enough to be asked to arrange the UK Butoku Sai in Commemoration of 111th anniversary of Anglo-Japan Alliance. As a lasting legacy the 'Kuwahara Promenade' was planted and every year while in blossom we visit for Hanami.

Tuesday night is the Big Fat Quiz from 7pm and Open Mic night ever

Today Hollywood Judo hosted a team tournament against Sawtelle and Goltz dojos. This time we also had the participation of a few students from the UCLA team. It was an action packed event going through 70 matches in less than 3 hours. A great opportunity for all our competitors, ranging from white to black belt. Also an opportunity for new referees to practice their skills, a win for all. After finishing the tournament, we brought in pizza to everyone. This tournament that we now host 2-3 times per year has become a tradition and its something that we all look forward to. A friendly atmosphere

Great evening of randori yesterday with this lovely bunch. Bringing back an old tradition at Bexhill-on-Sea of a randori sesh a couple of days after Christmas. Lovely to see Noah and Alex back on the mat after a while, as well as players from a variety of clubs including Westerleigh Judokwai, Kin Ryu Judo Club, The Official Camberley Judo Club, Tonbridge JudoClub, Croydon Judo Club, Hollington Judo Club, 1066 Grappling Guild, and the two Martins of Tony Ferreira BJJ.
