I once received an award from the BJA that I refused to accept, a close friend once wanted to nominate me for a red and white belt that I never ever wanted anyway, frankly all I ever want to do was teach and help children and promote judo.
The past 6 months I have had the opportunity to coach at Wortham Primary School in Suffolk. As the years roll by it does not get any easier to coach however, I yet again experienced children and indeed the staff at the school that make it all worthwhile. To be presented on my last day with a present and a card signed by all those incredible children pounds

At the Don Werner memorial competition at Brentwood Essex we had just William in action. Two wins saw him progress to the semi final and like the Kent International suffer a defeat that left him with yet another bronze medal. It is somewhat bizarre to say I was more pleased with his losing fight simply because of his mature fight management. It may sound crazy but he did everything right other than win the contest but that is not to take anything away from his conqueror who thoroughly deserved his win and eventual gold medal. We do not have many players I am prepared to risk outside the Easter

What an amazing night! The club held a rare open session and we were rewarded with 24 juniors on the mat and 12 on the senior session. It was brilliant to see 3 from my sessions at Wortham Primary School. Eden as usual lead both sessions with professionalism far beyond her experience. Such sessions with so many novices are difficult but she was ably supported by Georgina and to a lesser extent myself now struggling with injuries from the weekend ladder fall as well as the hip problems. However, the night was a cracker with some promising newbies on the mat. Finally, must also say I stole the i

Back to full strength tonight with the return of our groundwork specialist as Sean took the competition class. So nice to reunite and catch up again. Thanks Sean for making my night an easy one.

Another excellent turnout tonight on both junior and senior sessions. We will now take a break from Lopham Village Hall and return on the 9th September refreshed. A big thank you to Eden (supported by Emma) who has taken almost all the sessions this year and tonight to Tom Georgina Reece and Tony who came on and helped me with the little ones. We are developing not just players but a coaching structure to carry on Kumo Judo Club.
Finally a big thank you to the players/parents and those under the radar of whom there are many that make this club what it is.
Have a great August and see you all in

With so many missing tonight and unable to match some of our regulars the session consisted of just Tom and Reece again. I am so fortunate that nowadays I am more of a spectator than active coach depending on Sean to take this evening's 2 hour session. It is so frustrating to know where I want to place my legs but totally unable to do so because of the arthritic hips. However, the show goes on and a big big thank you to Sean for tonight.

A flashback to July 2018 Georgina and Reece. Proud to say we still have both of them on the mat and training together. Kumo more than a judo club.

When the kabin numbers exceed the club's senior Monday evening session we must be doing something right. We had 3 Dan grades 2 brown belts and 3 red belts all subjected to a grueling 90 minutes with no place to hide. The provision of the kabin means we can provide both recreational judo at Lopham Village Hall and much harder competitive session at the kabin. My neighbors need medals for putting up with the car parking and the music resonating from the building.

This is a photo of Alfie after a recent training session in Japan. Alfie becomes the fourth Kumo Judo club player to train in Japan following in the footsteps of Colin Oates, Jono Drane and Niamh Southgate, the difference being all 3 were Great Britain players at the time. Alfie is only an orange belt and I cannot imagine the courage required to go on a Japanese mat without the backup of fellow players. We are immensely proud of him.

Another really relaxed Kumo Kabin session. Nowadays I only have to lay mats once a week but with the kabin I am still able to coach additional lessons.

Another excellent Kabin night even if missing our resident DJ, ok we had to put up with some Country and Western instead-no just kidding.

There is a competition in July at Felixstowe that is ideal for some of our eager players. Felixstowe have always supported our events in the past and it would be great if we can do the same for them. Kumo players (unless extreme circumstances ) are always supported by a coach and will be on this occasion too. Please either enter through us or at the very least inform us that you have entered. It is the only realistic event some of our players can do. Sadly we have been unable to promote a competition at Lopham so far this year as our focus has turned toward kick starting some of our more senio

I forgot to mention that Lopham Village Hall will be closed on the Bank Holiday Mondays in May, so no judo next week.
Our Invitation Only senior session continues to thrive. There are so many advantages in knowing the level and perhaps more important the size of the players attending each week. Last night 5 ladies 5 men which included 2 Dans, 2 1st kyus and 6 blue and unders. All within a working weight level. I was reluctant to try this experiment but had nothing to lose as my senior session had been wrecked by Covid. We have the promise of new novice seniors at the end of May so hopefully t

After a tough week for Eden in the gym we now go our separate ways. Sean traveling on to San Diego having, at his own expense, diverted to Vegas to help me support Eden. We will not meet again until November.
This club doesn’t boast we can make a player’s dream come true but we provide a wonderful journey.
Judo is more than a sport and Kumo is more than a judo club.
Thanks Sean see you soon.

Last Thursday and Friday I had a bit of a heart attack and I am currently in Norfolk and Norwich hospital, I’m good so don’t worry. We held back the news because Vicky was on holiday and I didn’t want her to worry. Obviously next Monday won’t run but if there’s one consolation December is a good month for a heart attack, no competitions cold and long nights and sporadic numbers. We will return in January I will release dates as soon as I’m home. All scans so far are positive and good the last is tomorrow. I’m going to be on more drugs than a heavy metal band but that’s how it is. I knew my blo

As the weather warms up we can return to the Kumo Kabin (which can get very cold in winter).
Excellent night which saw the beginning of Tia’s welcome return to the mat following her injury.
Looking forward to the return of Sean and then we are complete.
On Saturday morning 13th April we will be running a grading and a competition course for our players.

Last night Eden and myself coached at Wortham Primary School and then traveled to Colchester to deliver 2 sessions for Dan Cross at the Flying Dragons Judo Club.
What a busy but brilliant day of judo as we coached over 60 players in one day.
There is no way I could have done any of this without Eden. She lead all 3 sessions and was amazing.
This said we are not taking our eye off the ball Eden is STILL a player and her comeback will continue in Belgium next month and our preparation now begins in earnest.
Finally I emphasise I was not the leader of the sessions yesterday it was all Eden’s insp
