I forgot to mention that Lopham Village Hall will be closed on the Bank Holiday Mondays in May, so no judo next week.
Our Invitation Only senior session continues to thrive. There are so many advantages in knowing the level and perhaps more important the size of the players attending each week. Last night 5 ladies 5 men which included 2 Dans, 2 1st kyus and 6 blue and unders. All within a working weight level. I was reluctant to try this experiment but had nothing to lose as my senior session had been wrecked by Covid. We have the promise of new novice seniors at the end of May so hopefully t

At the East Anglian Fours and Dan grading today we had just the one player in action. Tom took a well earned bronze in a group of brown belts and went on to win a contest at the grading giving him 20 points toward his black belt. A big thank you to Eden who did not have any opponents so manned a table most of the day.
Also, those players who earned their red belts at our grading last Monday will be provided with their new belts by the club. We will order them tomorrow. There was a time when they were provided free by the BJA, however, we will meet the cost for you and hopefully help toward the

The players that graded for the first time on Monday night to 1st Mon are now entitled to wear a red belt. We have registered the grades with the BJA. The certificates take some time, however, if you do not receive anything in say 4 weeks or so please let us know.

After 5 years we finally managed to field a players in Europe following Brexit/Covid. The trip was never about winning medals even though we scraped a bronze with Eden, Reece exiting after a couple of defeats. I am not the type of coach that makes excuses for defeats and have no intention of starting to explain the inns and outs behind the day. It was my intention just to see whether I could still make these long drives once more, my own personal motivation. Frankly I can honestly say I passed with flying colours. The weekend was brilliant-a reunification with my friend and her family and a wo

Our final Kabin prep for what will be Kumo's first trip to Europe since Niamh and Eden fought in Rotterdam back in 2019. Neither of our 2 fighters have been very active on the circuit indeed this will be Eden and Reece's first competition of the year and events in Europe usually are tough. However, this club has for 30 years fought internationally and despite our little jaunt across the pond last year (which I cannot really count I guess) it is vital to pick up where we left off prior to Covid/Brexit. It will also be wonderful to meet up again with a lifelong friend for the first time in 5 yea

Well done to our players tonight returning from an Easter break, just 16 as opposed to our usual 24-26 in previous weeks. Next week I will set aside time to grade anyone who wants to move up the ladder so bring your licences please. Also there is a development competition at Thetford on 12th May for players over 8 who wish to compete. Those under 8 will have to wait until 6th July for a competition at Felixstowe-this event also provides for over 8s and it would be really nice to support Felixstowe who have always put players into our competitions at Lopham.

Back during the pandemic the cabin became an oasis for judo when our hall was closed and we had to work in bubbles. Today for the first time since 2020 we ran a Saturday session. A big thank you to our small band of competition players that support the session, especially Sean.

Probably my finest hour in judo, winning a 4th consecutive Gold medal in 1999 at the British Masters but more importantly my final 10 points for my competitive 3rd Dan.
Dave Saunders had beaten me 3 times before this and although we were always mates it was nice to get this one over him. Dave was a true gentleman.

After a tough week for Eden in the gym we now go our separate ways. Sean traveling on to San Diego having, at his own expense, diverted to Vegas to help me support Eden. We will not meet again until November.
This club doesn’t boast we can make a player’s dream come true but we provide a wonderful journey.
Judo is more than a sport and Kumo is more than a judo club.
Thanks Sean see you soon.

At the Eastern Area Championships we had just 4 players in action.
William and Eden Gold with Tom taking Silver and Toby Bronze.
A total of 9 wins against 3 defeats.
Very positive performances from our small team of players two of whom on the comeback trail.
Well done.

At the Wymondham Invitational event today there were Golds for Elicia and Reece, Silver for Tom and Bronze for Joe, 11 wins and 3 defeats.
This is exactly what is needed in the East to develop and promote judo- brilliant local events not requiring early starts or late finishes.
Well done Wymondham and all your supporters and thank you for the invitation

VHS MEMORIES
September 1994 Vicky Oates opened the first ever contest at Kumo small hall competition at the old Garboldisham village hall.
Tomorrow some 29 years later, Lopham Village Hall will promote yet another competition to help get novices on the ladder.
Vicky went on to represent Great Britain at cadet level. How wonderful to think just one of tomorrow’s novices might emulate that achievement.

At the Novices event this morning at Lopham Village Hall just 3 players in action Jemima Gold, Elicia Silver and Joe Bronze, 4 wins 3 losses.
Another packed hall and a brilliant turnout from the Area clubs.
In 2024 it’s our intention to promote an all female competition in an attempt to encourage girl/ladies judo.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to match girls/ladies.
Watch this space.

At the Higham and Rushden competition Jemima, Toby and William all took Gold with 7 wins and no losses.
This was our last competition of the year and obviously a nice conclusion to 2023.
We do not have any players ready for the Nationals this year but we are certainly making progress post the covid pandemic.

Last Thursday and Friday I had a bit of a heart attack and I am currently in Norfolk and Norwich hospital, I’m good so don’t worry. We held back the news because Vicky was on holiday and I didn’t want her to worry. Obviously next Monday won’t run but if there’s one consolation December is a good month for a heart attack, no competitions cold and long nights and sporadic numbers. We will return in January I will release dates as soon as I’m home. All scans so far are positive and good the last is tomorrow. I’m going to be on more drugs than a heavy metal band but that’s how it is. I knew my blo

I am home, fixed and ok. They replaced a Philly cheesesteak in my artery with a stent.
Big thank you to the magnificent staff at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.
Also what wonderful messages from our judo family and I’m not just talking about Kumo.
Really appreciate your best wishes and looking forward to 2024.
Best of luck to all attending this weekend’s Nationals.

Review of 2023
We had a somewhat bizarre year with injuries. We had Eden battle to fitness from a shoulder injury only for Tia to suffer the same (almost) injury.
In William, Toby, Jemima,Ned, Noah, Elicia and Joe we have young players fighting on the outside circuit with success.
The most welcome return of Tom, Eden and Reece to competition was a boost to our already active seniors Alfie, Ben and Oscar.
In June Denise officiated at the European Junior Cup in Walsall establishing another first for the club.
Thanks to our own Russell we now have a heating system that makes winter at the hall ma

With this year’s World Veterans to be held in Las Vegas in November I may well have been tempted to come out of retirement and fight one more time. My last fight was in Belgium in 2008 a country I consider my second home and a fitting end.
Las Vegas is probably my third home and it would have been nice to come back surrounded by Keno, Phillycheesesteak and judo. Alas it is not to be now but still have the VHS memories of taking Gold at the Samurai competition in 1999
