Judo was created in 1882 by Kanō Jigorō, a Japanese educator and martial artist. He combined the techniques of different jujitsu schools and added his own philosophy of mutual benefit and efficiency. He also emphasized free sparring and removed dangerous strikes and weapons. Judo became popular in Japan and abroad, and was adopted by the Tokyo police as their official martial art. Judo also became an Olympic sport in 1964, and has since grown into a global phenomenon with millions of practitioners. Judo celebrates its founder’s birthday every year on October 28th as the World Judo Day.
